City leaders announced a new maritime shipping hub coming to southwest Brooklyn.
The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park is set to be reactivated as a working maritime port facility.
"The port is becoming a larger and larger contributor to our region's economy, generating nearly 300,000 jobs and almost $40 billion in economic activity each year," says port commerce director Richard Larrabee.
Cargo ships will move from Bayonne in New Jersey across the harbor to Brooklyn. Officials say this will reduce truck traffic on bridges and roadways.
"275,000 truck trips less and 10,000 fewer tons of carbon monoxide emissions, so it's a very substantial environmental impact," says Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Councilman Carlos Menchaca (D-Brooklyn) says he helped secure a 39-year lease for the terminal with the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
