A Brooklyn animal shelter is getting a makeover, in the hope of creating a more comfortable space for pets waiting for their forever homes.
A pet is like a child for some people.
"It becomes a part of your family," said Swithin Laurecin, a former cat owner.
However, pets can be an expensive family member as the cost of living rises.
"Pet food, pet supplies and veterinary care, it's all going up. So, people and families have been having to make some really hard decisions," said Katy Hansen, communications director at the Animal Care Centers of NYC.
Hansen says overcrowded shelters are a problem nationwide. In January, the ACC took in over 1,100 pets.
"Right now, we have over 360 dogs in our care, and we have room for about 185," said Hansen.
An ACC shelter located at 2336 Linden Blvd. was a small facility facing similar issues. Now, the organization says a larger facility says a new 23,900-square-foot, two-story building will take its place.
The $48 million project will include a dog run, a medical unit and a training space for the animals.
Similar ACC shelters in Queens, Manhattan and Staten island are now open. The Brooklyn facility is expected to open in fall 2026.
However, adoption events are still available. Hansen says an adoption event at the Spot located at 232 Varet St. in Brooklyn will be happening this Saturday and Sunday.
