Homeless advocates are up in arms after learning that New York state threatened to pull funding for 16 homeless shelters across New York City.

The state threatened to withhold funding for homeless shelters, including Auburn Place in Fort Greene, until the city addressed the deplorable conditions that state inspectors say continue to exist there.

Many homeless advocates have come forward to express their anger and concern for the homeless community in Brooklyn.

"We can't solve the homeless crisis by defunding the very organization, centers and places of shelter where so many women and children reside," said Brooklyn Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo.

The state told News 12 Brooklyn that they are waiting for the city to present a plan on how to address health and safety violation concerns at those shelters. In addition, the state says that in the interim, it will continue to provide funding to the city.
