Stately glass windows are just one feature that helped earn the East Midwood Jewish Center landmark status.
Historians say lay people built the 80-year-old building on Ocean Avenue as a community center and synagogue. The ceiling has a glass skylight and the structure has 20 40-foot-high stained glass windows. Historians also admire the building?s architecture and say the fact that it was built on a main street was a bold statement for the time. Services were conducted in Hebrew and English, not Yiddish.
The center carries on the traditions of the past 365 days a year with morning and evening services.
