New this morning:
The biggest snowstorm in nearly 10 years will slam the city today through tomorrow afternoon with over a foot of snow, damaging winds and coastal flooding. The forecast is on track for 16-20" of snow.
A BLIZZARD WARNING goes in effect 1 p.m. this afternoon through 6 p.m. Monday. In addition to more than 1ft of snow, wind gusts could reach up to 55 mph. Visibility could drop to below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. A blizzard is classified as blowing snow with gusts 35 mph or stronger for 3 or more hours.
A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect 10PM tonight through 2AM Monday. 1-2 ft of inundation above ground level is expected in the most vulnerable areas.
Storm Timing
Light scattered snow showers and breezy conditions are expected through noon. Snow banding becomes steadier and more widespread this afternoon with winds gradually picking up.
Weather conditions will rapidly deteriorate after 4PM this evening through 7AM tomorrow morning. Wind-driven snow showers will end Monday afternoon. 1-3" snowfall rates will make it nearly impossible to travel and bring impassable road conditions with snow totals between 16-20" and isolated higher amounts with any heavy snow branding.
The biggest threats are blowing snow with high wind gusts up to 55 mph that will reduce visibility down to less than a 1/4 mile and a significant risk of power outages. Whiteout conditions are expected for hours overnight through tomorrow morning. It is advised to avoid traveling during the peak of the storm and if you need to go outside, proceed with extreme caution.
Moderate coastal flooding is also part of the storm, which is expected during high tide tonight near the waterfront, coastal communities, and low-lying areas.1-2 ft of inundation above ground level is expected in the most vulnerable areas.
After the storm
This is also a very heavy wet snow, also known as 'heart attack snow'. If you suffer from any underlying health issues, it is advised to get someone else to help remove the snow from your property and around your vehicle.
Hundreds of flight cancellations and delays will continue for days as well. On the plus side, Tuesday will be drier with sunshine but very cold with temperatures in the low 30s.
The snow is expected to melt throughout the week with temperatures climbing back into the 40s. Unfortunately, once the snow melts during the day, it will refreeze at night due to temperatures near or below freezing. Our next storm chance is Wednesday into Thursday with rain and snow showers. Stay tuned for updates.
