Sunny Sunday
Today is hot and humid with mostly sunny skies across the borough. It is a great day for summer activities at Orchard Beach, Van Cortlandt Park, or along the Bronx River, but take it easy during the peak afternoon hours. High temperatures will rise to near 90 degrees, and thick humidity will push heat index values between 95 and 100 degrees.
The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a Heat Advisory for the Bronx and the NYC metro area from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT. NWS Upton triggers a Heat Advisory whenever the heat index is forecast to reach 95 to 99 degrees for two consecutive days or hit 100 degrees or higher for any length of time. While dry air overhead will keep most of the day rain-free, an isolated pop-up shower or thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out during peak afternoon heating along local sea breeze boundaries.
Boat & Beach
If you are heading to Orchard Beach or taking a boat out onto the Long Island Sound or East River, weather conditions remain generally good.
Winds will blow out of the west to southwest at 10 to 13 mph today, with afternoon gusts reaching 15 to 20 mph along coastal areas like City Island and Throggs Neck. These gusts may create localized choppy conditions on the Sound and surrounding river waters, but marine conditions remain well below advisory levels. Anyone cooling off at Orchard Beach should make sure to swim only where lifeguards are actively on duty.
Monday Storms
Monday morning starts warm in the low 70s before temperatures quickly soar back near 90 degrees. Most of the daytime hours will stay dry, but an approaching cold front from the west will bring a line of strong to severe thunderstorms late Monday afternoon into the evening.
Because the NYC metro area sits closer to the approaching system, the Bronx stands to see early impacts from these storms. The line could bring localized damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and brief heavy downpours. This could create slow conditions for the evening commute on the Cross Bronx Expressway, Major Deegan Expressway, I-95, Bronx River Parkway, Metro-North, and local MTA subway lines.
Mid Week Changes
A stray shower or storm is possible early Tuesday morning before skies clear and temperatures return closer to normal in the mid-80s. Wednesday stays mostly fair during the day before a strong cold front dropping down from Canada brings another round of rain and storms Wednesday evening into Thursday.
Once that front clears, a significant cool down arrives just in time for the weekend. Sunshine and low humidity will return by Friday, bringing crisp high temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees through next weekend.
