Though visiting a post office is an easy task for many, those with physical limitations might find some struggles in the Bronx.

One such post office is on Jerome Avenue in Fordham. One resident says due to several stairs in the way of the post office, he is not able to move his child's stroller up the steps without putting either himself or his child in a difficult position.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera is now calling on Congress to act, saying, "This is why we need political will in Congress, to mandate for ADA standards to apply to every post office in New York."

Congressman Adriano Espaillat was contacted about the situation and responded: 

The United States Postal Service says the Jerome Avenue location does not have to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and rather has to comply with the Architectural Barriers Act, which requires buildings leased or made after 1968 to meet standards for people who have a disability. They say the Jerome Avenue office was built prior to 1968.

Despite this, USPS says it will offer special arrangements for customers with accessibility concerns who call 718-364-8432.

USPS adds that people who wish to use a fully accessible post office can head to the Morris Heights post office at 2024 Jerome Ave.
