Drivers planning to use the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway this weekend should prepare for traffic disruptions. The Department of Transportation will reduce a portion of the expressway to a single lane both this weekend and next weekend as they install technology to crack down on overweight trucks.
This partial closure will affect the section from Adams Street to Washington Street on the Staten Island-bound BQE.
The reduction will last from 1 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 , through 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16.
The lane reduction will continue the following weekend during the same time frame from Saturday, Sept. 21 to Monday, Sept. 23 . During this period only, the DOT says the Sands Street entrance ramp will also be closed to facilitate roadwork.
The DOT says they are installing Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology designed to detect and manage overweight trucks.
They say the technology was installed on a portion of the Queens-bound BQE and they saw great success. The DOT reported around a 5,000-monthly reduction in overweight trucks in the first seven months after installation compared to the seven months prior to installation.
Motorists are advised to avoid this section of the BQE or seek alternate routes.
