The partial building collapse at the Mitchel Housing complex has raised questions about the building's aging structure and what’s next for Bronx residents.
"They were lucky that the shaft was not in the inner corner of the building like typical," said structural engineer Wikeor Wasilewski.
Wasilewski told News 12 that if the location of the shaft was in the center of the building, it could have created "much bigger" damage.
As for what remains of the building at 205 Alexander Ave., he said the damage is repairable.
“The structure is perfectly safe. It's just skeletal structure. Skeleton is intact, the corner was blown out,” Wasilewski said.
The NYCHA buildings at Mitchel Housing were built in 1966 and house more than 3,500 residents. The complex has 11 buildings in total. After Wednesday’s incident, Wasilewski said residents of the nearby buildings should be on alert.
The mayor said demolition was expected to begin Wednesday evening, but the Department of Buildings has not confirmed the timeline of those plans.
