The Department of Education confirmed that a 21-year-old female student died Tuesday after choking.
The DOE says Dyasha Smith was a student at the School for International Studies on Baltic Street in Cobble Hill.
School officials say Smith, who has autism, choked while eating food in class.
EMS was notified at around noon and Smith was taken to Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Smith's mother says her daughter was supposed to have around-the-clock supervision and she doesn't understand how this could have happened.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina says guidance counselors will be made available at the school to help other students. The school's special commissioner of investigations has also been notified to make sure the proper protocol was followed.
