Thirty students took part in the "Build Your Own Wakanda" Hack-A-Thon workshop in Bushwick Wednesday to reinforce values in energy and sustainability.
Wakanda, home of the Marvel superhero Black Panther, is a technologically advanced and sustainable country. The Sankofa Global Project sparked interest in young minds to create their own smart city modeled after Wakanda. Tracy Gray, the organizer of the workshop, says kids at the program were encouraged to brainstorm and work out their own visions.
Gray says her main mission is to increase the number of women and people of color in science technology, engineering, and math fields by making programs more accessible for students.
The workshop was hosted at the Collab Fabrication Lab Innovation Studio. Another event will be held Thursday.
