A nonprofit in Brooklyn is helping high school students get in touch with their creative side.
Cecilia Mejia is the cofounder of Art of Me, a nonprofit run by women of color, working with under-resourced high school students in Brooklyn and other parts of the city to bring their diverse stories to life.
Through workshops, Mejia and her team help students build confidence in the work and themselves, instilling in them that if they play the long game, their message will be heard.
Mejia says she wants to give these teens creatives a space she did not have.
Since the launch of Art of Me four years ago, Mejia and her cofounder have not only dabbled in film with the students, but online publications, animations, podcasts and a graphic novel as well.
