Students in Canarsie are showing their peers why they should kick the habit of smoking in honor of "World No Tobacco Day."
Two freshmen from the High School for Medical Professions, both of whom have experienced smoking-related losses, worked together to help create an anti-smoking mural for the school's cafeteria wall. The mural depicts a skeleton with a good and bad heart, representing the difference between the smoker and nonsmoker.
Danasia Howard and Jadaida Glover worked with Brooklyn Smoke-Free Partnership and Global Kids on the project. The students say one of the reasons this campaign is so important is because there are thousands of New York City high school kids who smoke every day.
Rachelle Rochelle, of the Brooklyn Smoke-Free Partnership, says 20,000 New York City public high school students smoke, and one-third of those will die prematurely due to the effects of tobacco.
