New data is linking cancer to something everyone does every day.
According to a study focusing specifically on women, sitting for six hours or more per day increased the risk of developing cancer.
By sitting for long periods, researchers found that the risk for multiple myeloma jumped by 65 percent. The data also shows sitting increases the risk of ovarian cancer by 43 percent and invasive breast cancer by 10 percent.
Dr. Ernest Patti, of St. Barnabas Hospital, says it's still not clear why the increase is so prevalent in females, but that it may be due to higher estrogen levels.
Doctors say the good news is that little changes can make a big difference. They recommend a one to three minute standing break several times a day, and instead of being sedentary while watching TV, you could exercise at the same time.
