New Yorkers will soon be able to catch the subway a little later.
Starting Feb. 22, the subway will run until 2 a.m. It will reopen again at 4 a.m.
Back in May 2020, the subway began shutting down each day between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. - for one of the few times in its history.
That window was used to fully clean and disinfect stations, subway cars and more.
The suspension was done in the hopes of slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the new adjustment will give riders two extra hours to catch the train.
He says the move comes after COVID-19 numbers have been decreasing in New York City.
“COVID numbers are down, so we adjust. The system has to run, that’s how essential workers get to work,” said Gov. Cuomo.
“This two-hour service suspension will allow us to continue our enhanced disinfectant regime, which has led the subways to be the cleanest they have ever been,” said Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and CEO Patrick Foye.
MTA officials also called on the city for an increased police presence at subway stations, as well as an expansion of the 311-reporting system to keep riders safe after a string of recent attacks on the subway.
