A local group is bringing together hundreds of young men of color for a day of mentorship.

The Eagle Academy Foundation in Brownsville is kicking off its Black History celebrations with a summit that aims to achieve social change.

The organization provides support to the six Eagle Academy For Young Men schools in the city. The goal of the summit is to empower and uplift at risk inner-city youth.

Students listened to speakers, took part in workshops and participated in African rituals, such as the transformation walk where the students are blindfolded and led by their mentors — signifying the transition from boyhood to manhood.

The event is in its fourth year and brings together high schoolers and middle schoolers from around the city.

Organizers say they hope this event can help shape the young men into leaders in the community.
