Brooklyn tenants pushing for affordable housing and landlords in favor of rent hikes testified during a meeting at Borough Hall Wednesday night.
Tenant groups pushed the Rent Guideline's Board for a zero percent increase on rent stabilized apartments. They say they just want fair housing.
The Crown Heights Tenants Union, the Flatbush Tenant Coaltition and other tenant groups all testified, saying they face extreme displacement pressures due to gentrification.
Meanwhile, as Brooklyn real estate is booming, landlords argue they have a right to make a profit. They say maintaining a building can be costly, especially as property taxes rise.
"It's unfair to put the burden of low-income housing, or lack thereof, on the landlords," said Linda Perry. "We could be driven out just as easily as the renters."
The board is expected to vote on June 23.
