After a 4-year absence the Bushwick Starr is reopening their theatre doors for the first time in their new location on 419 Eldert street Tuesday, for the preview screening of the show Woman Among Women.
The project took over 3 years, and over 7 million dollars to construct, after the theatre lost its previous location on Starr street in 2020.
"Part of the joy of this for us is having a space to invite people into not just putting on a show which we love, but like cultivating a place for people that comes to feel kind of like a home for people to gather," said Co-Owner Noel Allain.
As crowds filled into the 85-seat theatre, Allain tells us he is glad to have the space to host reception in a new lobby, and that the space will also be used as a community event space, for smaller pop-up events.
As for the show, the Playwright for Woman Among Women Julia May Jonas the theater's modular set up allows for the show to embedd actors in the audience, allowing for singing and movement that a normal venue would not offer.
She says she has been working with the original Starr since 2008 and is excited for its triumphant return.
"In a landscape where we are losing theatre after theatre its incredibly encouraging for artists like myself to and the community we serve to have a new space where we can create experiment and bring art and artistry to new neighborhoods ," she said adding "it starts in a circle and it goes other place and given the flexibility of the Starr we would not be able to do this anywhere else."
Allain says that is the kind of innovation his space will bring to the area, for years to come, all thanks to artists taking chances and pushing boundaries.
"It's really important to have places where people can take those kinds of chances, because that's where innovation happens. that's where you discover new things, is where audiences can discover things they haven't seen before," he said.
As for the success of the venue, he tells me shows are sold out for a week out for the current season.
