Advocates for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden attended a public hearing to denounce new plans to erect new buildings that they say would cast a shadow on the garden.
The final hearing took place at 10 a.m.
Advocates for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden argued that 14-story buildings will block the sunlight its plants and flowers need. They also add that the partial shadow would impact the growth of rare orchids, Bonsai, and other tropical desert plants.
From 2019 - 2021, the garden fought off a different plan to build a development complex on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights. Now a new project is being considered in the same area.
According to the garden, an application by Continuum Company came through back in May to up zone 962-972 Franklin Avenue. The new plans call to double the current seven-story cap.
Community Board 9 has voted to disapprove the rezoning, something that Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso was in favor of. Residents were on both sides of the discourse, voicing their concerns.
"Imagine this is going to be another high-rise residential building that no one really is going to be able to afford anyway so if you weigh those two out I would go with the garden," said resident Fritz Abrahamson.
The city planning commission will now have one final vote on the proposal.
