Police say thieves broke into the Astoria Federal Savings Bank on 18th Avenue Sunday, robbing dozens of safe deposit boxes.
According to Brian Edwards, a bank executive, the alleged robbers broke into the bank through the roof and stole valuables from 60 of the 2,900 safe deposit boxes inside the bank. Edwards says the bank is working with customers one-on-one to determine what they had in their safe deposit boxes and if the thieves left any of their valuables behind.
The bank has extended its hours and will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday. Bank executives urge anyone with a safe deposit box to visit the branch.
Police are reviewing the bank's surveillance video for information about the suspects. No arrests have been made.
