Mayor Bill de Blasio held a celebratory press conference Monday after a nurse at a Queens hospital became the first person in the state to receive the coronavirus vaccine.

"We will turn the ride on the coronavirus, this is a day to celebrate," de Blasio says. "And what a fitting beginning to the day that our health care heroes were in the spotlight."

Pfizer and BioTech's coronavirus vaccine arrived at five hospitals in the city today.

Within 24 hours, vaccine data will be reported to the citywide immunization registry in order to keep track of residents who receive the vaccine.

A total of 39 other hospitals are expected to receive shipments of the vaccine by Wednesday. In total, 465,000 doses are expected to arrive in New York City over the next three weeks.

It is still not clear whether the vaccine works on children under the age of 16.

The mayor also said that as of this week, 250 New York City schools are participating in in-person learning five days a week. He says the goal is to have more schools return to in-person education each week.
