New York City is expecting super low temperatures Friday into Saturday, so here are some tips on staying warm indoors.
First, check the batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms. The detectors not only prevent carbon monoxide poisoning but can also prevent a fire from happening in a home. Having the detectors installed in the bedroom and within ten feet of boiler rooms is ideal.
Another safety tip to remember is that it is common for some New Yorkers to lose heat when low temperatures arrive. If this happens, never use a stove or oven to heat the home. For those with an electric space heater, only plug it directly into the wall outlet.
The city also has heat requirements all landlords must follow, such as internal temperatures must be at 68 degrees from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. During the overnight hours, it must be at least 62 degrees.
If a landlord is not complying with these standards, residents are urged to file a complaint by calling 3-1-1.
