The Taxi and Limousine Commission voted on a 9% pay raise for ride-share drivers Wednesday. This comes after similar minimum pay rules were blocked by an Uber lawsuit last year.
The vote to those raises was unanimous and will now increase the average gross driver pay by 14%.
The raise is to ensure that drivers will be able to cover all vehicle and related expenses while correcting what they say are inefficiencies and inequities in the industry.
The commission has raised the required minimum pay three times to account for inflation since 2019, but TLC's assistant commissioner says driver expenses outpaced general inflation in 2022.
A few residents tell News 12 the increase is a win and can only bring more positive changes. Others say they want to see more.
The commission says the changes will be put in place as soon as March 13.
