A town hall on gun safety took place in South Huntington Tuesday evening.
It was meant to bring in people with a variety of viewpoints to discuss ways to prevent gun violence. It was hosted by the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund.
Dix Hills' Linda Beigel Schulman has been fighting for common sense regulations on firearms since her son, Scott Beigel, was fatally shot in the 2018 Parkland school shooting.
"We all want people to be responsible gun owners," Beigel Schulman says. "Nobody wants to take away your gun."
Other speakers included a gun owner who famously destroyed his AR-15 after the Parkland shooting and Dr. Chethan Sathya, with Northwell Health's Center for Gun Violence Prevention.
The meeting comes just a week after the subway mass shooting in Brooklyn and at a time when gun violence is rising on Long Island.
Nassau County has reported 28 shooting incidents in 2022. There were 15 shootings during the same time in 2021.
Suffolk County police also recently found a 14-year-old boy with a loaded handgun near a Huntington Station middle school.
There was also a shooting at Roosevelt Field Mall and a fatal shooting near Northwell Health recently.
Jessica Guerrero, a parent and gun owner, says there has should be a balance between safety and exercising Second Amendment rights.
"We need more gun education and gun safety, and more gun control definitely," Guerrero says.
