A turtle was found in Deer Park purposefully trapped in a cage underwater with a hook lodged in its mouth.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says Town of Babylon Park rangers were notified and located the animal while responding to a complaint regarding numerous e-bikes in Geiger Park on Aug. 23 around 3:30 p.m.

When the rangers pulled the turtle out of the cage, they thought it was dead. After moving it around, they discovered the turtle was still alive, which meant that it had not been in the cage for a long time.

The SPCA says that the cage was secured with zip ties to prevent escape, and a hook was stuck in the turtle's mouth tethered to the cage.

The turtle was transported to the West Islip Veterinary Hospital for emergency evaluation and medical treatment.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
