Local leaders say a solution to faulty mailboxes at NYCHA complexes could soon be in sight.
For years, NYCHA residents say they have been plagued by broken mailboxes that led to stolen or missing items. NYCHA, USPS and local politicians are trying to fix the issue by having free parcel delivery boxes installed near NYCHA complexes.
"Missing mail, late mail, having seniors travel far distances, and to hear stories of them having to wait in very long lines just to pick up their packages, even during Christmas and during the holiday season, it's unacceptable," says Councilman Mark Treyger.
Elected officials say initially when USPS made an offer to install the parcel boxes, NYCHA ignored the offer. Rep. Max Rose released a statement in response, saying, "It's mind-boggling how long the issue of NYCHA residents being unable to safely and reliably get their packages delivered has gone on. There was always a simple solution, and I'm encouraged to see that after our efforts, both USPS and NYCHA have pledged to work together to install much needed parcel boxes."
NYCHA did not immediately respond to News 12's request for a comment.
The first boxes are expected to be installed at the Marlboro Houses in Gravesend.
