THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT

It is still steamy outside now and through the overnight hours. It is not a night to open the windows as temperatures this evening will still feel like the 80s and 90s before only dropping into the 70s into Wednesday morning with moderate to high humidity. It will be dry under a partly cloudy to mostly clear sky though.

PEAK HEAT WEDNESDAY

Please continue to do what you can to stay cool on Wednesday with actual air temperatures in the middle to upper 90s for Nassau and western Suffolk Counties. The heat index in these areas will be around 100 to 104 degrees at times. It will be a bit more tolerable for the immediate South Shore and East End, but still hot and humid with temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s there. Most of the day will be breezy dry with a hazy, smoky sky and some passing clouds at times. There will be a slight chance for a passing shower or thunderstorm at night and into early Thursday morning.

WILDFIRE SMOKE FROM CANADA RETURNS

You may have noticed a smoky looking sky that made the sun look "strange" on Tuesday afternoon. Well, that was wildfire smoke from Canada in the upper atmosphere over Long Island. That improved Tuesday evening, but that is a preview of a potentially worse round of that wildfire smoke that may be close enough to the surface to reduce air quality at times the rest of this week. News 12 will continue to monitor this for you closely through the end of the week. If you have respiratory issues, you may want to think about staying indoors if you notice visually or smell that wildfire smoke in our Long Island sky. This can also enhance sunrises and sunsets through the end of the week.

WEEKEND WASHOUT?

If you have outdoor weekend plans as most of us do during our beautiful Long Island summers - listen up! Unfortunately, this weekend is not looking so beautiful right now. Saturday looks to be the wetter day at the moment with scattered rain and a thunderstorm chance. There is some hope for Sunday afternoon, but showers may linger. Long Island does need rain to improve drought conditions still, but this next round looks to be poised to impact the weekend.
