A water main break in Amityville left multiple businesses without water and forced the closure of southbound Route 110 for several hours Tuesday, creating traffic backups on Route 110 and Sunrise Highway.

According to the Suffolk County Water Authority, the water main broke on Route 110 south of Sunrise Highway. Repair crews worked throughout the day to fix the damaged main, keeping the southbound lanes of Route 110 closed from the morning into the afternoon.

The closure diverted southbound traffic onto Sunrise Highway, increasing congestion in the area and frustrating drivers trying to navigate around the work zone.

Thomas Smith owns Crossroads Power Equipment on Route 110 and lives next to his business.

“I ran into the traffic because I usually open the business at 8,” Smith said. “And then I discovered that there is no water in the house.”

Smith said the road closure also made it difficult for customers to reach his business.

“I deal with landscapers and they have trucks and trailers and what not, and so unless they know this is going on then they can’t get to me,” he said.

The repair work also backed up traffic on Sunrise Highway as drivers were diverted off Route 110.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” said Katrina Conway, of Amityville.

Conway described the traffic situation as hazardous, while Joyce Madu of Massapequa said she was forced to take a detour while traveling to downtown Amityville.

“I had to go out, come back around in a circle, so I’ll be going back the opposite way,” Madu said.

By late Tuesday, the Suffolk County Water Authority announced that repairs had been completed, the water main had been fixed and water service had been restored to affected customers.

Officials said the roadway was expected to reopen during the evening commute.
