A restaurant in Crown Heights is now open, serving their unique Guyanese cuisine.
German's Soup is a little piece of the country of Guyana in Brooklyn.
Clinton Urling is the owner of German’s Soup. Inside, the restaurant is decorated with pictures of his father, and the restaurant he started 60 years ago in Guyana.
“German’s built the reputation of having the best soups in the country and the best Guyanese, local Guyanese, what we call ‘Creolese soups,’” says Urling.
German's Soup still serves people in Georgetown, Guyana, and now with Urling is continuing his father's legacy in Brooklyn.
The restaurant first opened in East Flatbush in 2018. They were about to move to the location in Crown Heights when the pandemic started.
“I had no cash flow, no money to do the transition, sales were slower because of COVID-19. But as all small businesses are in our core DNA, grit and persistence is part of who we are,” says Urling.
Finally opening at the end of September, they are preparing their fresh Guyanese Creole dishes daily they want everyone to experience their rich history and culture.
“I’m just elated and happy to be back up in business and serving great Guyanese cuisine and introducing New Yorkers to Guyanese cuisine,” says Urling.
The restaurant is also taking mobile orders, so meals are ready for customers to grab-and-go.
With social distancing and masks required, they're keeping everyone safe in their new space.
