The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the city on Saturday, signaling conditions favorable for wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, conditions included winds of 10-15 mph with gusts reaching up to 30 mph alongside temperatures ranging in the 60s. These weather patterns contributed to a heightened risk of brush fires, though such fires are uncommon within city limits.
The news shocked some Canarsie residents.
"Not in New York City? I don't think we have enough brush for that," said resident Awasi Phillip.
The National Weather Services reminded residents to exercise caution when using outdoor grills or gas equipment and to dispose of cigarette butts to minimize fire risk properly. The red flag warnings are lifted at 7 p.m.
