Students at a Brooklyn charter school are not only playing musical instruments, but they're also designing them.
The orchestra at Success Academy in Bed-Stuy is made up of second-graders who made everything from flutes and guitars to drums, all while learning the science of sound along the way.
From cardboard and empty containers to straws and rubber bands, the kids used everyday materials for their instruments, allowing them to explore pitch and volume.
The creative, hands-on lesson is all part of the academy's regular focus on STEM education, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
