State officials unveiled an initiative Friday that will make it easier for people to have access to fresh foods at farmers markets.

Gov. Ned Lamont joined top state lawmakers at the Monroe Farmer's Market to announce customers who participate in the WIC program will be able to pay for their purchases using their EBT cards, instead of writing checks.

State Sen. Kevin Kelly says the program has bipartisan support and will encourage more people to visit markets and support local farmers.

"Anytime we can give an opportunity to Connecticut agriculture to bring their quality products to farm to table, nutritious meals, it's a win, win not only for families but also farmers," said Kelly.

The state Department of Agriculture received a $250,000 grant for the initiative.
