A family living in a Williamsbridge NYCHA complex says they’ve finally learned the root of their yearslong housing issues, but that it’s only made things worse.
The tenant asked to remain anonymous and tells News 12 that what started as a leaky sink has spread through the walls and into multiple rooms of the family’s home in the New York City Housing Authority’s Gun Hill Houses.
The resident says he called NYCHA and that they brought cosmetic fixes at first, before a crew came last week, breaking through the kitchen’s back wall to find the source.
“There's an exposed pipe spraying out water, and then water dripping profusely on a rusted copper pipe. And they broke a hole in the wall. And just taped it up with duct tape instead of caulking it properly,” said the tenant.
The family is now forced to do dishes in the bathroom, where they discovered high levels of mold and moisture in the apartment. The resident says that this is a major risk for his three children who are all asthmatic.
News 12 cameras were rolling when building management contacted the tenant on Friday, promising a plumber would show up within hours.
NYCHA provided the following statement, in part:
"Once completed, additional skilled trades workers, such as carpenters and painters, will begin work making additional repairs in the unit."
