Tuesday marked the first day of Women’s History Month and News 12 is spotlighting the Young Women’s Leadership School of the Bronx.
The school launched in partnership with the Student Leadership Network, a group that strives for equity in education.
It is the vision of Devon Eisenberg, who co-founded the school in 2012 with a fellow Bronx teacher.
It started with sixth grade and an additional grade was added each year.
The school now educates girls in grades six to 12 and has nearly 600 students.
"You go into our classrooms and see our students they're already a step out of their comfort zones, they're learning how to be advocates, they're learning how to make a change in the world,” says Eisenberg.
The school weaves the values of inclusion, empowerment and collaboration into its core curriculum inside and outside of the classroom.
Spanish teacher Andrea Alvarado says the school opens doors and provides opportunities for whatever students want to pursue, that they may not have otherwise had.
Eisenberg says the school accepts about 100 sixth graders each year through the city’s school application process.
