Young New Yorkers marched across the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday to speak out against the lack of resources and safety in communities of color.

Three Brownsville teens suing a retired NYPD officer joined Monday's march. They are suing after the retired officer chased them with a gun back in 2021 when the basketball they were using hit the security camera of his store.

The former officer denied taking his licensed weapon out. He was arrested, but released within a few hours, even after the three teens described his weapon accurately.

"I was scared, I didn't think I was going to make it home," said Kyi-el, one of the three teenagers. "I was hoping that they would put him away, like put him in jail... it feels like I can't trust them."

Advocates say this lack of accountability is just part of the problem, calling out the mayor after he announced another round of budget cuts to city agencies that they say will disproportionately impact communities of color.

News 12 has reached out to the mayor's office and is awaiting a response.
