Dozens of people participated in a 5K on Sunday to raise money for homeless veterans.
The event, held at Owl's Head Park, honored Brooklyn resident and Vietnam veteran William McCabe.
His son, Liam McCabe, organized the run. He says his father, who suffered from PTSD, fought in the U.S. Army's Airborne Division and died on the train tracks in Bay Ridge on a cold Thanksgiving.
Liam McCabe says it was really hard to watch his father in and out of shelters and is now dedicated to standing up for the voiceless veterans
"A homeless veteran is someone who is maybe living paycheck to paycheck, just lost their job. They are average folks and they fall through the cracks," he says.
More than $1,000 was raised at the event. This year's proceeds will go to Samaritan Village, an organization that caterers to the needs of homeless veterans.
