For Frank Amaltifano, the war on COVID-19 means an uphill battle to protect more than 200 veterans and staff under his care at United Veterans Beacon House.
The nonprofit based in Bay Shore provides a safe haven for veterans, giving them shelter and various support services to help them transition from the battlefield to the homefront.
The coronavirus outbreak means Amaltifano must keep Beacon's 20 shelters constantly sanitized to protect the veterans from getting infected.
"At a dollar per square foot, about $2,000 a shelter every time you do it, you're doing 20 shelters. It's easy to figure the math out," says Amaltifano. It adds up to $40,000 for one round of clean at all of the shelters.
Amaltifano knew once wouldn't be enough to deal with the ongoing battle -- that's when JPMorgan Chase stepped in.
Amaltifano called the financial services firm and it responded within three days with a donation of $100,000.
"Veterans tend to be ill. They have compromised immune systems ... many are in communal living situations," says Rebecca O'Connell, managing director of JPMorgan Chase. "So there's an immediate need to get in there and sanitize and to continue to support them and keep them healthy."
Amaltifano says their generosity serves as a shining example of how a major corporation can help those in need under the most challenging circumstances.
"Extremely grateful to Chase," he says. "Cannot thank them enough."
