Mother of slain man wants violence to end
A Brownsville mother is calling for an end to the violence that took her son's life and is plaguing her neighborhood.
Diane Cicero stood with community advocates as she spoke to members of the media.
"Some coward just killed him," she said, referring to her son, Isaiah Cicero, 21. "Took my baby from me."
She fainted during the news conference, which was held where her son was killed. Cicero's father, Reginald David, also called for an end to violence in the troubled neighborhood.
Investigators say Isaiah Cicero was killed when gunfire erupted in front of 807 Saratoga Ave. last Thursday night. Two other young men were shot and injured. Surveillance video captured the incident. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.
Cicero's mother has maintained that her son was not a gang member.
Community advocates are calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio and city leaders to assist in curbing the violence.
"At the end of the day, the city has not picked up the phone to reach out to this family," said community advocate Tony Herbert. "But our mayor can be concerned about how people bear their breasts in Times Square," he said referring to the mayor's push to remove topless women from a pedestrian plaza there.
News 12 is waiting to hear back from the mayor's office.
