The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Friday in front of a Brooklyn bodega. While Alex Santiago, 26, is in custody and charged with assault as a hate crime, police describe the man they’re searching for as 20 to 25 years old, around 5-feet-8-inches and 200 pounds.
The two men are accused of yelling derogatory remarks at a 38-year-old woman regarding her sexual orientation.
Police say the woman walked away from the men as they shouted at her, but the men then followed her. After they continued to yell, they say that the woman attempted to confront them, but was then hit by one of them with an umbrella, causing a laceration to her face.
After calling the police, the men took off, but Santiago was quickly found and identified by the woman as one of the attackers.
The woman was taken to Brookdale Hospital for treatment on her laceration.
