Local politicians and businesses near the Brooklyn Bridge are calling for the Macy's July Fourth fireworks show to return to the East River. The fireworks spectacular was moved to the Hudson in 2009. Restaurant owners in DUMBO say the move has hurt them financially since visitors now head to New Jersey to get a better view of the fireworks. George Lati runs Punto Bianco, a new cafe that opened in the neighborhood. He says the show would undoubtedly help the local economy. State Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-25th District) says he wants Macy's to alternate the location each summer. "When the fireworks display is on the East River, you can see them from all five boroughs and it's a great location really in the heart of New York," says Squadron. A Macy's representative says the show will be over the Hudson this year, but that it may move back to the East River in 2013.
