Big safety changes are underway at what lawmakers say is one of the most dangerous traffic corridors in Brooklyn.
The city's plans to make Ninth Street safer for pedestrians and cyclists by expanding islands and adding protected bike lanes.
"This transformation today sends a strong message and a strong signal that communities must be safe," says Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adam.
The safety changes are set to be made for six blocks up Ninth Street. Officials say the project should be completed by mid-September.
Investigators say two young children were killed by a reckless driver at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Ninth Street back in March. One of the children's mothers suffered a miscarriage because of the incident.
