Thousands attend wake for slain NYPD officer
Thousands of people attended the wake Monday for Miosotis Familia, the NYPD officer who died in the line of duty during a shooting in Fordham last week.
Colleagues, relatives and other mourners gathered at the World Changers Church on the Grand Concourse as her casket arrived. Lines to get in during both viewings stretched around the block. Many of the people who came to pay their respects were fellow officers from New York and around the country, including Commissioner James O'Neill and his predecessor Bill Bratton.
"There's no words that can take away the grief and pain we are feeling," said Deputy Inspector Philip Rivera, Familia's commanding officer at the NYPD's 46th Precinct. "But coming together -- and quite honestly the loving support we are getting from the community, random strangers and our brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community -- that's what's getting us through this time."
Even Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Gov. Andrew Cuomo paid their respects.
"It's important to remember the sacrifice that the men and women of law enforcement make," the governor said. "Every day they're in danger. Every day their children, their wives and husbands, are worrying about whether or not they're going to come home."
As News 12 has previously reported, a gunman ambushed her as she sat in a marked mobile command unit. Police later shot and killed the suspect, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds. Investigators say he fired a single shot at near point blank range through a window into Familia's head. She was 48 years old.
Familia worked as a nurse before her 12-year career in the NYPD. She leaves behind three children.
The funeral will be Tuesday at the same church.
