A fire tore through a NYCHA building in Brownsville last night, injuring 13 people, including residents who had to be rescued from the upper floors.
According to the FDNY, the fire started around 7:07 p.m. at 268 Osborn St., inside the Brownsville Houses.
Flames spread across the fourth and fifth floors of the six-story building, sending thick smoke into the hallways.
Firefighters responded quickly, deploying multiple ladders to reach those in danger. The fire was brought under control by 8 p.m.
Emergency officials confirmed that nine people were taken to local hospitals, while four others refused medical attention at the scene. Fortunately, all injuries were nonlife-threatening.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals.
This morning, News 12 has reached out to the Red Cross to determine how many families are receiving aid.
