New York state has released new lists of its most dangerous schools, and a majority of them can be found in Brooklyn.
The state labeled a total of 40 New York City schools as "persistently dangerous" based on reported violent and disruptive incidents. That includes 17 in Brooklyn, which is more than in any other borough.
The DOE published two lists, one with newly persistently dangerous schools, and the other with continuously persistently dangerous schools. East New York residents say they are shocked to hear P.S. 190 on Sheffield Avenue is one of the schools that made the list.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina met with students and staff at a summer learning program in Cypress Hills Thursday, where she also addressed the list, saying that the city's Department of Education plans to take action. She says officials will be visiting each of the schools within the first week students return to conduct a hands-on evaluation.
The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island all had schools on the list, too. Only seven of the schools on the list are located outside of the city.
