Two Cypress Hills men were arrested Thursday in an alleged vicious cockfighting ring.
Authorities raided their house around 6:30 a.m., taking pictures and searching the residence from top to bottom. The city's Animal Care and Control removed 59 birds that police say were being bred for cockfighting.
Authorities say some of the birds had sharpened claws, shaved bodies, and cut off tails and combs. Other animals wore leather muzzles to prevent them from biting people. Most of them were euthanized.
Authorities also say they found hypodermic syringes, steroids and growth hormones at the residence.
Pedro Mejia and Juan Corchado face several charges, some of which include failure to provide proper sustenance for animals and animal fighting.
