If you're planning to travel for Memorial Day weekend, you're far from alone. AAA is forecasting a record-setting holiday for road trips—with more than 45 million Americans expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday.

News 12 was in Sunset Park Friday morning, near the entrance to the Gowanus Expressway, where some early risers were already making their getaway.

According to AAA, 87% of holiday travelers are expected to drive this year, with Friday being the busiest day for road trips and rental car pickups. Drivers are encouraged to leave before 11 a.m. to avoid the worst congestion, which typically builds between noon and 8 p.m.

There’s some relief at the pump:
Gas is averaging $3.20 per gallon across New York City—down 68 cents from last Memorial Day, according to AAA’s fuel tracker.

AAA's Memorial Day Travel Tips:

  • Leave early to avoid traffic

  • Be patient—major routes will be crowded

  • Fill up today—gas prices are lower than last year

  • Stay alert—expect wet conditions and possible delays

Experts say the time to hit the road is now. Stay with News 12 for more traffic and weather updates throughout the weekend.
