With one month of summer vacation still remaining, hundreds of Long Island students are already prepared for the upcoming school year thanks to a News 12 back-to-school giveaway in Uniondale.

A total of 500 backpacks filled with school essentials were distributed to students from the Uniondale, Hempstead, Roosevelt and Westbury school districts through a partnership between News 12, Optimum and Warner Bros. Discovery.

In addition to backpacks stocked with school supplies, students received drawstring bags containing pencils, water bottles and pencil cases. Families also took home Stop & Shop gift cards and Goya snack products.

"We do appreciate it because everything now is so expensive, so this helps a lot," said Ana Perla, a parent from Westbury.

News 12's Rich Barrabi joined in handing out the backpacks.

School leaders said the event eased the financial burden many families face as the start of the school year approaches.

"I can't underestimate how important this gift is for our children, and it's one less thing our parents have to do," said Uniondale School District Superintendent Monique Darrisaw-Akil. "We know cost of living and rising costs are affecting families across Long Island."

Students also had the opportunity to select free books provided by Book Fairies, a Long Island-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literacy.

"It's so important for a kid to have a book in their hands," said Book Fairies Executive Director Eileen Minogue. "Tablets have their place, but kids need books in their hands."

After picking up their school supplies, families were invited to explore the Cradle of Aviation Museum free of charge, making the event both educational and celebratory.
