Annual Sept. 11 service at The Rising memorial in Valhalla honors victims and Ground Zero responders

Many people are expected to gather at The Rising memorial at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla today to remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks and those who later died from related illnesses.
The memorial was dedicated in 2006 on the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11.
The 80-foot-high stainless steel open-air sculpture was created by architect Fredric Schwartz.
Families of the victims selected both the location and the design.
Visitors can step inside the memorial and view stones bearing each victim's name and a family inscription in an area known as the Circle of Remembrance.
A section was added five years ago to honor those who died after working at Ground Zero.
The memorial honors 109 Westchester residents.
The site also includes a beam from the Twin Towers and the Fallen Memorial Walkway, which honors Westchester soldiers and Marines killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Westchester County 9/11 Memorial Service is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla and is open to the public.
