Sinkhole shuts down busy stretch of Central Park Avenue, with closure expected through morning rush

Yonkers officials say a portion of Central Park Avenue will remain closed through the Wednesday morning commute after a water main break caused a sinkhole.
The break occurred Monday and led to the closure of the southbound lanes of Central Park Avenue between Yonkers Avenue and Boone Street.
Tuesday's coverage
Officials say the weekend's heavy rain did not cause the break. Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier said the city's water system is more than 120 years old and pipes can rust or fail when under significant pressure.
Crews are continuing repairs and must determine whether the sewer line next to the damaged water main was affected. Officials say the road is expected to remain closed for the morning commute, but the closure could last longer if sewer damage is found.
Nearby residents still had water Tuesday afternoon, though officials said service would eventually need to be shut off as repairs continue.
Bee-Line Route 20 is also being detoured because of the closure.
