A 24-year-old man is fighting for his life in the hospital after neighbors say more than 20 gunshots rang out on Avenue X Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at the Gravesend NYCHA building at around 10:45 a.m.
The family of the victim says he was trying to break up a fight before he was shot at least three times as he tried to flee across a courtyard.
Neighbors say that while they are saddened by the incident, they are relieved no one else was injured, especially since it happened an area children often play.
The victim was transported to Lutheran Hospital with gunshot wounds to the stomach. He is listed in critical condition.
Police have not made any arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
